The Upperroom is known as the room in Mount Zion in Jerusalem, just outside the old city walls, traditionally held to be the site of the last supper and the final meal in the Gospels. It’s reference comes from two words, one of them being the Latin word, and the second is a Greek word, both referring to the meaning of “Upper-Room”.
The story of the Upperroom is found in Matthew 26:17-30, Mark 14:12-25, Luke 22:7-20 and John 13:1-20. It is referred to in scripture as “the place of the last supper” where Christ forever more instituted the observance of communion, instructing His disciples to do this in remembrance of Him. This is what we do today in remembrance of Him through communion. The representation of eating His flesh and drinking His blood which makes us one with Him.
Before Jesus ascended into Heaven, whilst talking to his disciples, in Luke 24:49 He instructed them the following way:
“And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.”
In Acts 1:8, scripture tells us that the disciples will:
“Receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you: and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in Judea, and in Samaria and to the ends of the earth.”
Jesus was preparing them for the gift of power that would come upon them, but to get it they needed to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the gift. The discipled already had the Holy Spirit within them, but did not yet have the Holy Spirit power upon them. The power upon is the power that gives you the ability to operate in signs, wonders and miracles. In Pentecost circles, we refer to that as the baptism of the holy spirit.
In John 20:22,
“And when he had said this, he breathed upon them, and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit.”
So, they already had the Holy Spirit before they went into The Upperroom. He told them in The Upperroom that they would be receiving another power from on high, which would come upon them. This takes us to the book of Acts. In Acts 2:1-4 it reads
“and when the day of Pentecostal was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
We then see in the next verses 14 onwards that Peter gave an incredible speech and preached about the fact that this was what was prophesied in the old testament, in the book of Joel particularly, but not only.
In verse 17 Peter said
“and it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams…”
Acts 2:38 says
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
Verse 41 continues, “Then they that gladly received his word were baptised: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls”.
Now we believe that in order to fulfil the great commission, we need the outpouring and the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It isn’t just enough to be born again, it is imperative that we have an “unction to function”. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to function.
I know, and I’ve seen many Christians throughout my 35 years of ministry that do not have any power to act out the Gospel. They don’t have the power to witness, nor the power to lay hands upon the sick, the power to live victorious Christian lives, and it is primarily due to the fact that they have not received the power of the Holy spirit which is the second experience after being born again. So we here in The Upperroom believe that God wants to raise up a powerful generation of people on the Central Coast, and from here we will go out and do the work of the ministry in His name.
